THE WESTERN PLATEAU Its made up of old hard rocks, rich in minerals It covers 2/3 rd of the Australian continent Most of the Australian deserts are located in central and north western part.(2.3 mn sq km) is size of the desert & it occupies 44 % of the entire continental area. Great Victoria Desert,Great Sandy Desert, Gibson Desert are famous Australian desert. (Eastern side-Location) The Kimberley Plateau is located in the north western part of the Western Plateau. Its height is 365 mts above the sea level. The Darling Range, Hamersley Range, Mac donnell Range and Musgrave Range are some of the mountain ranges.

The highest peak Mt, Kosciuszko is located in the Australian Alps, ht= 2,234 mts and is snow capped. Blue mountains, Gregory Range in Queensland and the New England Range in New South Wales are the important ranges. The Eastern Highlands slope steeply towards the east, but more gently on the west.
