Review Adding Integers: 1. 18 + (-5) = 2. -19 + 24 = 3. -13 + (-7) = 4. 17 + 11 =
2
Subtracting Integers Objective: Learn to subtract integers.
3
When subtracting integers: When subtracting integers with different signs, you subtract normally and keep the sign of the highest absolute value. Ex: -5 + 3 = -2 If you have two negative numbers, we will follow the addition rules and keep the sign. Ex: - 6 - 7 = so you add both numbers and the answer is negative. Example: – 10 – 7 =
4
Ex. 6 - 15 = So you have a positive and a negative number.. When you have a positive and negative number you must SUBTRACT and the answer takes the sign of the larger absolute value. So the answer is – 9 Your example: 12 – 26 = When subtracting integers:

Watch out! Whenever you see 2 negative signs together, you must turn them both into positives! For Ex. - (- a ) = + a When you subtract a negative number… For example: 1 – (– 2) (You must change both the subtraction and the negative sign to one plus sign, because it means the opposite of a negative. ) Like this: 1 + 2 = 3 Ex. 1 : 4 – (- 19) Ex. 2 :-11 – (- 42)

Summary Adding and Subtracting Integers 1. + + + = add (+) 2. - + - = add ( - ) 3. - + or + - = subtract and… the answer takes the sign of the larger absolute value. 4. When you see 2 negative signs together, with no number in the middle….you must change them into a positive!! - (- ) = +
