8. 1. Bedouins Some Arabs were Bedouins. They herded sheep, goats and camels. The Bedouins were nomadic people. They ate mostly fruits and nuts. They rarely ate meat.

11. 1. Mecca The trade routes in Arabia grew. More towns were set up along trade routes. The largest, most prosperous and most religious was Mecca. In the center of the town was the Kaaba. It was a holy building which pilgrims came to see. Inside of it was a stone that Arabs believed was from heaven. They believed in many gods but their main god was Allah, the creator.

16. 2. Muhammad's Message In 610, Muhammad, a man born in Mecca, said an angel told him to preach Islam. Islam means to surrender to the word of Allah. Allah means God. Muhammad told the people not to worship many gods to only worship Allah. Said all people were equal rich and poor Good people would be rewarded and evil would be punished.

18. 2. Opposition to Islam Followers of Islam are Muslims The wealthy did not like Islam. They began to torture Muslims To escape, Muhammad and his followers left Mecca and went to Yathrib in 622. The city then became known as Madinah. (city of the prophet) This year later becomes the first year of the Muslims calendar His journey was known as a Hijrah. Which means breaking of relationships.

20. 2. Muhammad’s Government People believed Muhammad was a prophet. He created an Islamic State. He used his political power to uphold Islam. He built an army and his soldiers conquered Mecca in 630. Mecca became Islam’s holy city.

22. Beliefs Islam is a monotheistic religion. Believe they must obey God to be blessed in the afterlife. Muslims believe that Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad were all prophets. They believed no other prophet would come after Muhammad.

23. Quran The Quran is the holy book of Islam. (it is like their Bible) In the Quran, is the writings of messages Muhammad revived from Allah. In the Quran, it says Muslims cannot eat pork, drink liquor, or gamble.

24. 3. Laws Muslims must complete the 5 pillars of Islam in order to enter into paradise after death. They must also follow a law code that was created by Islamic scholars. The law code was made by using the Sunna (Islamic Customs) and the Quran.
