2 Eight different types of government we will be discussing:  1. Democracy  2. Monarchy  3. Dictatorship  4. Republic  5. Transitional  6. Communism  7. Oligarchy  8. Anarchy

3 Democracy  1. A democracy is when the PEOPLE decide who the ruler will be.  Example: South Africa

4 Monarchy  A country ruled by a King/Queen.  Example: England

5 Dictatorship  A militant leader rules the country.  Example: Cuba

6 Republic  Not ran by a monarch or dictator. The people of that country can affect the government by popular vote.  Example: Ancient Greece

7 Transitional  A government is moving from one government to the next.  Example: Iraq right now (they were a dictatorship, and are currently moving to a Democratic-Republic).

8 Communism  A system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self- perpetuating political party.  Example: China

9 Oligarchy  A rule of which a select few people rule a country.  Example: Russia, prior to becoming a communist state.

10 Anarchy  Total chaos. While it sounds “cool” people would really live in fear.  Example: French Revolution, Salem Witch Trials

12 Activity in Class  Please grab out a separate sheet of paper.  You are going to create a country (give it your own name).  Identify for me which government from the eight we discussed, which government you would like your country to be.  Justify your reason why you chose that particular government and be ready to defend your reasoning (this should be a minimum of three paragraphs: introduction, reasoning, conclusion.

14 Tomorrow:  We will go to the CPU lab and work on the Culture project.  KEEP your country paper! We will be adding more to this as the week progresses!

15 Exit Slip  Write down on a post-it ONE thing you learned and ONE thing you still have a question about.  Have a wonderful afternoon.
