1 Vocabulary Unit 2 ELA 8 General Remember, a good a sentence— Begins with a capital letter Ends with punctuation. ? ! Contains at least eight words In this unit, please show me that you can use the words there, their, and they’re correctly.

2 There is an adverb that tells where. Put the book over there. There is a new store opening in Lockport. There you are! I couldn’t find you anywhere! Their is a possessive pronoun. It shows ownership for they or them. Their new puppy has a shiny brown coat. The girls dropped their books in the hallway. The boys said their favorite class was ELA. They’re is the contraction for they are. They’re going to meet us at the movie theater. They’re a really cute couple! I think they’re taking the wrong path to the park.

3 1.accompany— go along with; join in Will you accompany me over there so I do not have to go alone? Their son is going to accompany me to the homecoming dance. They’re going to accompany us to the movie.

4 2. cite— mention in support or proof The teacher said to cite your answer from the text in the article over there. Their answers were not properly cited, so they could not earn a 4. They’re really good at citing evidence for the claims they write.

5 3.derive— reach by reasoning; deduce; infer The detectives solved the case by deriving clues from the evidence over there. Their conclusions were derived by studying many different medical journals. They’re going to quickly derive that it’s a surprise party.

6 4. enhance— improve; make stronger; add to You can purchase products at the make-up counter there to enhance your eyes. Their addition of color enhanced the poster’s appearance. They’re looking for ways to enhance their landscaping.

7 5. fluctuate— change constantly; shift back and forth Is there a way to prevent one’s weight from fluctuating? The money in their bank account fluctuates from week to week. They’re walking on the beach and watching the water fluctuate with the tide.

8 6. implement— put into practice; use or utilize There are going to be new rules implemented about the dress code. Their ideas for activities in gym class will soon be implemented. They’re implementing new legislation regarding school lunches.

9 7. maximize— increase to the greatest possible amount I will maximize how quickly I can get over there by running instead of walking. Their idea to maximize the taste of the pasta by adding more spices is excellent. They’re going to maximize their effort on the group project to earn the highest grade.

10 8. norm— a standard or custom One of our norms is shopping there since the store carries plenty of organic items. Their norm is to celebrate the holidays with their dad’s parents. They’re going to buy new school clothes at Kohls, a norm for them.

11 9. obtain— come into possession of; get hold of Do you see the car over there? I just obtained it yesterday. Their dog was obtained through a rescue organization. They’re going to obtain a marriage license since they’re getting married soon.

12 10.paradigm— an example serving as a model There are several great paradigms for you to refer to when composing your essay. Their answer was so good that the teacher used it as a paradigm for later classes. They’re thinking about transferring to a local private school that has a reputation for being a paradigm in education.

13 Check over your warm-up sheet and make certain it looks perfect! Are all of the vocabulary words spelled correctly? Look at the beginning of each sentence. Does each sentence begin with a capital letter? Look at the end of each sentence. Does each sentence end with punctuation, most likely a period? Check the length of your sentences. Do you have at least eight words in each sentence? Check for our grammar lesson. Do you have there, their, or they’re in each sentence? Highlight the vocabulary word in one color. Highlight the there, their, or they’re in another color.
