8. Some final comments…. Both works reveal aspects of the human experience. The House of the Scorpion touches upon issues such as human dignity. Matt is a human being because he has an intellect and will; he has a capacity to think and act for himself. Other clones have this too, but their brains are crippled at birth. They are robbed of their human faculties.

9. Some final comments…. Eejits are robbed of their humanity too. Ex. Rosa Matt recognized that as cruel as Rosa was, a cruel Rosa was better than a mindless Rosa. He recognizes the that what happened to Rosa was profoundly evil.

10. Some final comments… El Patron believes he has the right to possess people and use people. He believes he has the right to control. To have your human faculties taken away is the greatest evil that can happen to you. You lose the part of you that makes you human. El Patron believes he has the right to take away one’s faculties; this is what makes him so disturbing. People are to be valued. A person can never be another person’s possession.

12. Class Debate Rules: You must acknowledge the previous person’s view by summarizing his argument, and then point out which part of his argument you disagree with. You must not interrupt the person. You must be attentive.

13. Question 1: Do you think The House of the Scorpion is a good piece of literature or is it merely an interesting work that brings up good questions? What are some of the flaws and strengths? Are the characters well-developed or do the characters act in ways that are not convincing? Example to consider: Is Tam Lin’s decision at the end consistent with his noble behavior earlier in the story?

14. Question 2: The Screwtape Letters is considered a Christian classic. Do you think Lewis’ style and approach is effective or do you think it is too preachy? Is it only powerful to Christians or does it possibly have a universal appeal?
