What makes a verb reflexive? Reflexive verbs describe actions done to or for oneself. ◦ Me cepillo los dientes I brush my teeth ◦ Ella se baña por la mañana She bathes in the morning 1 person doing/benefiting ◦ Me cepillo I brush MYSELF ◦ Se baña She bathes HERSELF

What do ref. verbs look like? In the infinitive form, verb ends in –se (reflexive pronoun RP) ◦ Ejemplos: lavarse afeitarse When conjugated, the RP moves in front of the verb and agrees with the subject. ◦ Ejemplos: Me lavo (‘yo’ RP & ‘yo’ form of verb) Te afeitas (‘tú’ RP & ‘tú’ form of verb)

COMPARE and CONTRAST a reflexive and non-reflexive statement: REFLEXIVE: “Me despierto temprano los días de trabajo.” Non-REFLEXIVE: “Despierto a mis estudiantes cuando duermen en clase.

COMPARE and CONTRAST: REFLEXIVE: “Ella se lava la cara” Non-REFLEXIVE: “Ella lava los platos”

Constructing a reflexive verb: 1 st : Drop –se Choose the correct reflexive pronoun (RP) according to the subject Me Nos Te SeSe 2 nd : Conjugate Conjugate the remaining -ar, -er, or -ir verb as you would normally

Ex: peinarse – to comb (oneself) 1 st : Drop –se Choose the correct reflexive pronoun (RP) Me Nos Te SeSe 2 nd : Conjugate Conjugate the infinitive as you would normally peinopeinamos peinas peinapeinan Use corresponding boxes to form your phrases: ej: Te peinas …. Or Nos peinamos…
