3 About Journalism Though there are many variations of journalism, the ideal is to inform the intended audience. Along with covering organizations and institutions such as government and business, journalism also covers cultural aspects of society such as arts and entertainment.

4 Newspaper Scavenger Hunt Use the news articles that has been given to you to identify basic news writing techniques. You will identify the lead, headline, byline, quote, news story, editorial and advertisement

5 Newspaper Scavenger Hunt Assignment Directions: With a partner, find examples of each of the following techniques in your newspaper. Use the activity sheet to list the examples. You will read 2 news articles and list the information for each article. Lead -- Usually one sentence that tells who, what where, when, why and how. It is found at the beginning of the story. Headline -- The title of the story Byline -- The author of the story Quote -- Exactly what someone said and is in quotation marks

6 Newspaper Scavenger Hunt Assignment- Part 2 Find and identify two of each of the following: News story -- A story that is timely and describes an event of interest Editorial -- A writer tells his or her opinion about a subject Advertisement -- An article or ad that is paid for by the company
