Students will be divided into groups of seven and work on assigned a problem that occurs during Pregnancy.

 What is it?  Symptoms?  Treatment or Prevention

1. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) 2. Miscarriage 3. Ectopic (tubal) Pregnancy 4. Toxemia 5. Gestational Diabetes 6. Rh incompatibility 7. Premature Birth

 Dilation-In the first stage of birth, called dilation, the uterus contracts, which causes the cervix to dilate or open up.  Membranes surrounding the baby rupture.  Mother’s “water breaks”  1 st stage ends when the cervix is fully dilated to 10 centimeters.

 The second stage is called expulsion.  Baby’s head emerged fully and the shoulders rotate.  An episiotomy may be done at this stage. An episiotomy is a surgical incision of the outer end of the vagina to allow more room for delivery of the baby. The second stage ends with the delivery of the baby.

 The third, or placental stage beings after the delivery of the baby and ends when the uterus expels the placenta (or “after birth”) and umbilical cord out of the mother’s body.  The umbilical cord is tied and cut.  Then mother and baby are checked for signs of problems.  Mother can breast feed baby if the baby is not ill.  Most doctors recommend breast feeding because breast milk provides all the nutrients and infant needs and helps protect the baby from infections and stomach problems.
