7 Orally rehearse your map with a classmate. Let your classmate hold your map and check it while you tell your story. Checker: Make sure you listen CAREFULLY to the story. If your partner tells you something that isn’t on the map, have them go back and add it. Then you are ready to take your story off the map!

8 Last Saturday, I took Emily and Ethan on an important grocery shopping trip to Wal- mart. My in-laws were coming for a visit that evening, and I wanted to welcome them with a special meal. After entering the bustling store and snagging the very last cart, our search for the ingredients in chicken enchilada soup began. I was able to round up every ingredient except masa--an item that I had never even heard of. I asked a nearby attendant if he could direct me to where the masa is. His blank stare and shrugging shoulders told me that he knew as much about masa as I did--nothing! It was time to go back to the drawing board. Upon hearing the news that we’d have to change recipes, a tired Emily asked if she could ride on the front of the cart to rest her legs. Against my better judgement, I allowed her to do so. And sure enough, as I made a sharp turn down the juice aisle, she lost her footing. Down she crashed on the hard tile floor, crying all the way. In an effort to cheer his big sister up, Ethan decided to sing a song. However, it wasn’t a typical four-year-old boy song. Instead it was quite an embarrassing song. Ethan chose to serenade us (and everyone else in the store) with a lovely rendition of “Here Comes the Bride.” I begged him repeatedly to quiet down, but he only got louder with each smile and giggle he received from fellow shoppers. One person even clapped as he reached the end! I was so relieved when that shopping trip was finally over. I think next time--if there is one--I’ll just leave the kids at home with Daddy!
