1 Plant Science Terms and Anatomy
Horticulture I Flowers

2 Flowers Pistil Stamen Petal Pistil: Female Stamen: Male Sepal Stigma
Anther Recepticle Style Filament Pedicel Ovary

3 Flowers External Parts
Sepals-Green parts that cover and protect flower bud before it opens Petals-are really leaves that are modified to attract insects for flower pollination, the pretty part that we call flowers

4 Flowers Internal Parts
Stamen-male part of the flower Anther: Sac-like structure that contains pollen & the male sex cells Filament: Short stalk that holds up the anther

5 Flowers Internal Parts
Pistil-female part of the flower Stigma: Sticky part on top of the style where insects leave pollen Style: Holds up stigma and connects it to the ovary Ovary: If fertilized becomes fruit (Fertilization is when pollen travels down the style joining the sperm & the ovule) Ovules: The eggs or female sex cells that become seeds if fertilized

6 Parts of the Pistil Stigma Style Ovary

7 Functions of Flowers Produce seeds used for sexual reproduction
Attract insects for pollination Pollination is the transfer of pollen from anther to stigma Cross Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the stamen to the stigma of one flower to a flower on another plant Self Pollination is the transfer of pollen to the stigma of a flower on the same plant Produce fruit to protect, nourish and carry (disperse) seeds

8 Complete-vs-Incomplete
Complete flowers have both male and female parts Incomplete flowers have only male or female parts

9 What do you think?!

10 Activity Dissect this Azalea flower
Locate all the the internal & external parts of the flower Tape all parts to a piece of paper, then label each internal and external part
