Information and Ideas Foundation Paper Revision

How many sections are in the paper? The Information and Ideas paper comprises of 2 sections: Reading Writing For each section you have only 50 minutes, so keep an eye on the clock!

Reading Paper: Question 1 Information retrieval a) How old is Samantha? b) What provoked her to begin smoking? c) What were the first signs of her cancer? d) Write down the quote that describes how the cancer treatments felt to Sam. e) At what age did the signs of cancer first begin to show? [Question 1 a-c] This comprises of a quick selection of information from a text. Here you can get easy marks. Have a go at reading the smoking article and answering the questions as quickly as possible.

Question 1 – Final section Summarising (14 marks) TRUE OR FALSE?  I should not include my opinions in a summary.  I should write an introduction and a conclusion.  I should put quotes in wherever possible.  It is not wise to simply lift information from the text, I should convert the text into my own language.  I should write between half a page and two thirds of a page.

Summarise the negative experiences that Samantha went through as a result of the smoking. (14 marks) Begin by highlighting the relevant information in the text. Aim for 14 pieces of information or more. Remember: NO OPINONS JUST FACTS!

Question 2b) Analyse the language used in an article. (14 marks) Use POINT EVIDENCE EXPLANATION. Read the text carefully. Highlight and label the text. Discuss any AFOREST devices you can see. Spend at least 15 minutes on this question. Can we remember AFOREST?

AALLITERATIONFFACTS OOPINIONS R RHETORICAL QUESTION E EMOTIVE LANGUAGE SSTATISTICS T THREE (RULE OF)

How does the article use language to persuade young people not to smoke? Skim through the article, find and label 3 quotes with ideas of how it persuades the audience to avoid smoking. Make a note of any AFOREST used in the quotes you find.

How would I go about writing up my answer? The article uses a fact about the first signs of cancer to shock the audience. It writes ‘one morning she noticed blood on her pillow’. This will put young people off smoking because of the gruesome nature of the details it gives. It shows that smoking is not worth the suffering it could potentially cause. Can you spot the PEE? Now have a go at writing up your own paragraph.

2a) Presentational devices Headings and Pictures (6 marks) Use PEE where possible. Explain your points in as much detail as you can. Avoid bland, simple comments like ‘the writing is bold to catch the readers’ eye’. Instead write more thoughtful comments that link to the purpose/audience of the piece.
