The purpose of the CATCH Community Dialogue: to better understand the community assets required for healthy early childhood development (from conception to age 6) in the Central Okanagan to increase parent/guardian and community involvement in promoting and supporting healthy children.

6 Check out CATCH's new website at www.catchcoalition.ca Neighbourhood Selection for Phase 1 In May 2005, the Research Action Team, (the community-based team that guides the research), selected the first two (of 25) neighbourhoods in the Central Okanaganto be surveyed The Outcome… Shannon Lake and Northeast Rutland were selected for Phase 1 (the remaining neighbourhoods will be surveyed in Phase 2 or 3)

7 Check out CATCH's new website at www.catchcoalition.ca Parent-Volunteers n One of the main goals of the Dialogue is to connect parents/guardians in our community. n In June 2005, CATCH trained 12 parent- volunteers to interview other parents/guardians in Shannon Lake and Northeast Rutland n The volunteers were taught semi-structured interview-techniques – which encourage two- way conversation and openness

8 Check out CATCH's new website at www.catchcoalition.ca Interviews n Each interview was conducted by a team of interviewers (one interviewer and one notetaker) n The interviews took place in the family’s home at their convenience n The interviews ran from July to August 2005

The information provided by the families during these interviews help us to: To learn about the experiences of families with young children in the Central Okanagan To identify gaps and needs in supports and services To identify the services and supports that currently exist in the Central Okanagan To identify barriers that parents and children face when accessing services To gather information for a community- based Early Childhood Development Plan To determine the effectiveness of asset mapping for developing an Early Childhood Development Plan
