1 Executive Director Update November 14, 2014

2 HLSC Executive Director met one-on-one with leaders of member agencies and compiled a list of their needs. Those needs were summarized and prioritized in the May, 2014 members meeting. In turn, that prioritized list drove the focus in 2014 on initiatives such as professional development. “The Excellent Supervisor” (first time supervisor training program) was developed through a cross- agency team effort. In partnership with LeMoyne College’s Madden School of Business, the program has been delivered to 24 people from 19 agencies. Third and final session is November 14. 2014 Accomplishments

3 HSLC website was enhanced for improved communication and effectiveness. This initiative used cross-agency team input and was delivered in partnership with iConsult of Syracuse University. Enhancements include:  Member agencies’ logos are highlighted on home page and links to agency websites are functioning  Website is a reliable repository of information (meeting minutes, events calendar, announcements)  “Channels” in members-only section enable efficient information exchange among members 2014 Accomplishments

4 HSLC was a partner in the “Nourishing Tomorrow’s Leaders” board diversity development initiative, to broaden the community’s pool of board leaders. This collaboration - led by the Gifford Foundation, includes the Community Foundation and Leadership Greater Syracuse. 26 participants (new to board leadership) will graduate this board development program on November 18. Many are interested in serving on boards of human service non-profits. HSLC hosted an after-hours “open house” for members on October 14. 2014 Accomplishments

5 HSLC member meetings addressed important current issues (such as Nonprofit Revitalization Act) and updated members regarding the on-going initiatives of the HSLC. Executive Director served as “point person” for members, to respond to their questions and needs. Provided timely communications among HSLC members. Executive Director served as liaison to community. Attended community events to promote awareness of HSLC. Connected with CenterState CEO. 2014 Accomplishments

6 Early Childhood Development affinity group was launched. Regional collaboration efforts begun through outreach meetings with Rochester (Coalition of Agency Executives) and Tompkins County (Human Services Coalition) 2014 Accomplishments

7 Offer additional classes of “Excellent Supervisor” training Continually improve website’s content to make it a key resource for members. Include useful information on shared templates, vendors and other cost savings opportunities, best practices sharing, grant opportunities, agency events, etc. Encourage active use of “channels” and forums on the website for exchange of information and ideas. Host additional “after hours” open houses for members to informally meet and network. 2015 Outlook – Forecasted Activities

8 Launch and support Human Resources and Finance affinity groups, to build capacity and encourage innovative, best practice sharing. Facilitate “training swaps” among member agencies, to leverage existing training resources. Support an active Advocacy Committee, to address community issues and human services needs. Quantify and communicate the collective “economic power and value” of the HSLC agencies. Participate in workforce development initiative. 2015 Outlook – Forecasted Activities

9 Leverage the potential of regional collaboration with similar organizations/coalitions in Tompkins and Cayuga counties. Cross-promote training offerings. Formalize collaboration through periodic meetings among Executive Directors of regional coalitions, to identify and address common issues and needs among members. Pursue “group buying power” for member needs. Continue to get timely feedback from members on HSLC initiatives (through surveys and in-person meetings).
