4 MANAGER/LEADER zOver managed and underled zManagers have employees. Leaders have followers. zManagers command and control. Leaders empower and inspire. zManagers seek stability. Leaders seek flexibility

5 Manager/Leader Con’t zManagers make decisions and solve problems. Leaders set direction and then empower and enable their team. zManagers accept the organizational structure and culture. Leaders look for better ways.

6 Question zThe question for us then, is not the need for leadership. The question is how to become the leaders we need to be or how to develop the leaders we need.

7 Characteristics of a Leader zReflective zRisk Taker/Flatten the Pyramid zEmpowerment (Self management and Self motivation) Self and others. zRecognize Excellence and Creativity zThe ability to relate/communicate

8 Communication zListening - It seems in today's world that there are two kinds of people: those who love to talk and those who hate to listen. zLISTEN!! You must hear and from that, you must learn.

9 Communication con’t zHonesty, trust, accountability zFocus on people zCharacter development zClean up the clutter - reduce e-mail, faxes, seek feedback from primary internal sources zDevelop formalized ethics process

10 Communication con’t zThe right to succeed/fail - The only way to ensure you never fail is to never attempt anything. zNever be afraid to try. Remember, amateurs built the ark, professional built the Titanic. zConfidence - An optimist thinks this is the best world. A pessimist fears this is true.

24 REMEMBER zTrue leadership casts a long shadow. If we lead with respect, compassion, faith, we cast a long shadow that touches those who come behind us and sows the seeds of another generation of leaders
