1
Forms of Energy Mr. Dunnum Physical Science
2
Law of Conservation According to the lawlaw of conservationlawla of energy, energy is never created or destroyed. The only thing that changes is the form in which energy appears.
3
What is Energy? When an object has energy, it can make things happen. Energy is the ability to cause change.
4
Kinetic/Potential Energy Kinetic Things that move can cause change. Kinetic energy is the energy an object has due to its motion If an object isn’t moving, it doesn’t have kinetic energy Potential An object can have energy even though it is not moving. Potential energy is the energy stored in an object because of its position.
5
Potential Energy The potential energy of an object is greater if it is higher above the floor. Potential energy also depends on mass. The more mass an object has, the more potential energy it has.
6
Intro The forms that we are going to study are: Thermal/Heat Light/Radiant Electric Nuclear Chemical Wind Solar Hydraulic
7
Heat/Thermal Heat is the transfer of energy from high to lower temp. Thermal energy is just the energy that is transferred At higher Temp the particles move faster The faster the particles the more kinetic energy and the greater the thermal energy
8
Light Energy Light allows us to see But not all light can be seen Ex. Microwave Light energy is produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles The vibrations cause energy to be transmitted Light energy can be transmitted through a vacuum
9
Visible light spectrum
10
Electrical Energy Electrical energy is the energy of moving electrons The energy created by the electrons are used to do the work Work that stereos use to produce sound
11
Fossil Fuel There are three major forms of fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. About 70% of our energy comes from fossil fuels
12
Nuclear Energy Nuclear power plants use the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom to generate electricity Every atomic nucleus contains energy—nuclear energy—that can be transformed into other forms of energy.
13
Nuclear Energy Generates electrical energy Comes from changes in nucleus Lots of potential energy Fission-apart-Plant Vogle Fusion-together-sun
14
Chemical Energy Chemical energy is when the energy of the compound changes as its atoms are rearranged A form of potential energy Examples of chemical energy Food Gas
15
Wind Energy Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form, such as electricity, using wind turbines Wind energy has historically been used directly to propel sailing ships
16
Solar Energy Solar energy is the radiant light and heat from the Sun Solar power technologies provide electrical generation by means of heat engines or photovoltaic
17
Hydroelectric energy The mechanical energy of moving water is transferred by a rotating turbine to a generator, where it is converted to electric energy and conveyed along transmission lines.
