2. Summer Reading Program Rationale  The Summer Reading Program will keep you focused on school while encouraging you to enjoy and evaluate your reading.  Honors level English classes have required reading as a part of the rigor related to advanced courses and the additional credit awarded to those classes.  It also provides evidence of independent learning required in Honors classes.  It is good preparation for upper level Honors/AP classes and college coursework.

3. Summer Reading Guidelines  It is the students’ responsibility to retrieve the summer reading packet allotted to their grade level. These can be found with Mrs. Hoover in 271, at the guidance office, in the media center, and on the website home page.

4. Book Selection Read the requirement details for your grade level. Some assignments do give choice opportunities. In those cases:  Be certain that books are school-appropriate  Choose books with a minimum length of 200 pages (text, not picture books or graphic novels)

5. Where to Find Books  The AHS Media Center will be open throughout the summer for student use. Call or check the website for library hours.  Public libraries in Randolph County are available for student use.  Purchase books, if you choose, at Goodwill, Books-A-Million, Barnes & Noble, Ed McKay’s, yard sales, etc.  Online or downloaded texts may be good options for people with eReaders or personal computers. Check out Kindle for PC or mobile devices on www.amazon.com.www.amazon.com  Borrow books from friends and family.  Check out a book from an English teacher. Again, this is your responsibility. We suggest taking care of this BEFORE the end of the year.

6. Assessment Each grade level has a different written response format. Materials and handouts can be found on the AHS website at http://ahs.asheboro.k12.nc.ushttp://ahs.asheboro.k12.nc.us

7. Assessment Cont…  All work for summer reading MUST BE HANDWRITTEN by the student who is turning in the work.  All work is to be completed individually. Collaboration with others is considered cheating. Using others’ work, words, or ideas is plagiarism and will result in receiving a failing grade.

8. Assessment Cont…  All work must be turned in to the teacher of record on the first day of school August 26, 2013 by 3:30 PM.  No late work will be accepted regardless of which semester you are assigned English. If your schedule changes, the original teacher you turned work in to will be responsible for turning work over to the new teacher after the first day.
