Warm-Up 10/15/14 1) Get a sheet titled “Eating Nails for Breakfast” 2) Read the lab procedure. 3) Rewrite the procedure in your own words into your notebook.

Objective 10/15/14 Analyze for iron in cereal Agenda 10/15/14 Iron Lab Intro Warm-Up Procedure Changes/Additions Lab

Iron Lab Introduction 1) When you think of iron, where do you expect to find it? 2) What things are iron found in? We have 92 naturally-occurring elements in our world. Iron (Fe) is element number 26. And this is no difference between the iron found in nails or cereal!

Iron Lab Introduction Today’s Lab Question: Is there really elemental iron in cereal? Come up with a hypothesis based on the lab question.

Warm-Up 10/15/14 Procedure! Procedure Changes/Additions 1) Get approximately two spoonfuls of cereal and record the mass. Lay it onto your paper towel. 2) Hover the magnet over the cereal. Record any observations.

Procedure Changes/Additions 3) Crush the cereal with your spoon or hands on the paper towel before placing it into the Ziploc bag.

Results/Observations 1) Description of dry cereal. 2) Mass of dry cereal. 3) Any observations of magnet with cereal flakes. 4) Description of cereal and water mixture. 5) Observations during lab.

Clean-up 1) Pour the “cereal soup” into the glass containers in the back near the windows. 2) Clean unpunctured bag and put back on Ms. Au-Yeung’s desk. 3) Throw away punctured bag.

Conclusion Look back at the hypothesis you/your group formed. 1) Is it valid? Why or why not? 2) How did the dry cereal flakes compare to the “cereal soup” in terms of finding iron. 3) Indicate any errors made in the lab.

At the end of class… 1) Turn in lab write-up. Includes: -Procedure -Results/Observations -Conclusion

Announcement Ms. Au-Yeung will be absent until next Thursday. She is going to Ecuador! Be nice to the substitute!!!

Homework Post-Lab Questions 1) In this lab, identify the following: -Element -Mixture 2) What other variables could you test using this general lab procedure? 3) Carl Sagan once said “We are made of star-stuff.” What does this mean to you?
