Welcome Science Nerds! (and you are all science nerds whether you mean to be or not) Please place your Draw a Scientist homework in the basket for this class Mixing substances lab

Mixing Substances Lab Focus Question: What will happen when we mix two liquids? Hypothesis: When we mix the two liquids, ___________________________________ because _____________________________

Procedure 1.You will work in pairs. 2.Send one person from your table to the front to get a container with substance B (the clear-ish liquid). 3.Send another person to the side of the room to get a plastic tub. 4.Measure out 50 mL of substance B using a graduated cylinder. 5.Record your observations of Substance B on your data table in the BEFORE column. 6.Send one person from your table to the front to get 2 containers of Substance A (the white liquid) 7.Record your observations of Substance A on your data table in the BEFORE column. 8.Make observations of both substances BEFORE you mix them. 9.Pour Substance B into Substance A and stir with the glass stirring rod – MAKE OBSERVATIONS WHILE YOU STIR. 10.Continue stirring until no more changes occur. 11.Make observations in the AFTER column of your data table.

Clean-Up Procedure 1.Pour all your materials into the square plastic tubs on table 5 2.Place the graduated cylinders in the plastic tub. 3.Wash and dry the stirring rods and place them in the tub. RETURN THE TUB TO THE SIDE COUNTER. 4.Return the glass container (Substance B) to the front table. 5.Wash and dry the clear plastic cups that you mixed in and return them to the front of the room. 6.Wash and dry your tables.

Reflection (on back of handout or another sheet of paper) 1.What makes this substance interesting? 2.Did your observations support your hypothesis? What evidence (if any) supported your hypothesis? What evidence didn’t support your hypothesis? 3.Define the word “property”
