3 WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY? Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. “Psychology” has its roots in the Greek words of “psyche,” or mind, and “-ology,” or a field of study.” “Psychology has a long past but only a short history.”  Hermann Ebbinghaus

4 SO HOW DID THIS START? o Well we could go way back in time, but lets start with John Locke!  He believed in the idea of tabula rasa o The idea of empiricism is born! o Look in the blue box on your desk and answer one of the critical thinking questions in your notes!

6 PSYCHOLOGY IS BORN! o Of course psychology is immediately controversial o Psych is broken into different branches: o Early branches: o Structuralism o Functionalism o Later branch: o Behaviorism

7 STRUCTURALISM: THINKING ON THE MINDS STRUCTURE o Mainly devoted to uncovering the basic structures that make up mind and thought-looking for the elements of conscious experience. o Structuralism relies on introspection, or the process of reporting one’s own conscious mental experiences. o Answer one of the critical thinking questions in your box now!

8 FUNCTIONALISM: THINKING ABOUT THE MINDS FUNCTIONS o The focus here is on how people adapt to their environments. o Psychology should explain how people adapted- or failed to adapt-to everyday life outside the laboratory. o Answer one of the critical thinking questions in your box now!

9 BEHAVIORISM: THINKING ABOUT OBSERVABLE BEHAVIOR o Late to the game… sprung up in the 1920s o Psychology should be observable and without mental processes. o Most people still agree that psychology should be observable, but disagree about the mental processes part.
