1 F IGURATIVE L ANGUAGE A quick review before we play Bingo !!!

2 S IMILES Kevin is as bright as a light bulb. This guy is as blind as a bat.

3 M ETAPHORS The clown was a feather floating away. A way of describing something by comparing it to something else. The girl was a fish in the water.

4 O NOMATOPOEIA BANG! Ring ! Ring! Words that are sounds.

5 A LLITERATION The fall leaves fell fast. The repetition of consonant sounds in words that are close together. My heart grew heavy with hatred for homework.

6 P ROSE Any writing that is NOT poetry. Examples are The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Hatchet by Gary Paulson

7 P ERSONIFICATION The snowflakes danced in the wind. The Earth choked and coughed from all of the pollution. An object or animal is spoken of as if it had human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes.

8 I RONY A contrast between expectation and reality. Sarcasm can be another form of irony. It was as pleasant as a root canal procedure. Spending thousands of dollars to replace a lost ring, only to find out that it was not a real diamond.

9 H YPERBOLE The baseball player hit the ball and it soared to the moon. The film seemed to go on forever. A huge exaggeration.

10 I MAGERY The clouds were so dark that they blocked all the sunlight from the sky. The birthday cake had creamy smooth icing that tasted sweet. Language that appeals to your senses.

11 F ORESHADOWING Foreshadowing is used to build suspense or anxiety in the reader or viewer. The use of clues or hints to suggest events that will occur later in a plot.

12 P UN A play on words. I told my dad I take a stab at fencing. This lighthouse sure does shine at night.

13 I DIOM This homework will be a piece of cake. When the phrase is not taken literally. John has a chip on his shoulder because he is a baseball player.

14 S YMBOL In the story The Pearl, the pearl stand for greed and avarice. In the Tell-Tale Heart, was there any symbolism? Something that stands for something else.

15 F LASHBACK An example would be A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The movies Titanic and Butterfly Effect would be examples. An interruption in the present action to show what has happened in the past.

16 P ROTAGONIST Examples would be Harry in Harry Potter, Edward & Bella in Twilight. Examples from our class would be in The Fall of the House of Usher the protagonist is Phillip. The main character in a work of literature.

17 A LLUSION Example from a movie would be “Finding Nemo”, Nemo is named after the captain of the boat from the book “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. Example from poetry is Langston Hughes’ poem, Refugee in America refers to the National Anthem. A reference to someone or something from literature, history, religion, mythology, politics, sports or another field that many people are familiar with.
