2  Born September 25, 1897, New Albany, Mississippi  At the age of 5 the family moved to Oxford  Got bored with his studies at grade 6  Tried to join the U.S. Army Air Force  Was enrolled at the Un of Miss (dropped out 1920)  1921 got a job of an assistant in a bookstore  First published novel Soldier’s Pay (1926)

3 Literary career  1929 Sartoris, Sound and Fury  As I Lay Dying (Yoknapatawpha Country)  1930 first short stories (Rose for Emily)  1931 Sanctuary (best selling until the appearance of The Wild Palms 1939)  1932 contract with Metro Goldwyn Mayer  October 1936 Absalom, Absalom  'Ole Miss 1949 Nobel Prize for literature
