SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT the of grammar!

SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT a singular subject demands a singular verb; a plural subject demands a plural verb. That is the simple principle behind subject-verb agreement.

SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT In present tenses, nouns and verbs form plurals in opposite ways: nouns ADD an s to the singular form, nouns BUT verbs REMOVE an s from the singular form.verbs

SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT THE ONE-S RULE: If there is no S on the subject, the verb needs an S!! If there is an S on the subject, no S on the verb!! –Mary loves Tommy. –Kids play in the grass. –Jesse is a student at Marshall. –The Smiths are singers in the choir. –The dog has a new collar. –Doctors have to take sick days too.

SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT Practice Directions: Fix the subject verb agreement in the following sentences. 1.He remember the the day he visited his friend. 2.Marshall students gives school their best effort.

SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT Indefinite pronouns such as everyone and everybody feel plural to some writers, but they are always singular — and take a singular verb.

SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT Everyone associated with the project is proud to be part of the effort. Example: Someone has to be responsible. Don’t be confused by phrases that come between the subject pronoun and its verb — phrases that may contain plural words. Each of the project partners is responsible for writing a chapter summary.

SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT The verb that accompanies pronouns such as all and some will be determined by whether the pronoun is referring to something that is COUNTABLE or not. Some of the students in the cafeteria have voted already. Some of the grain was ruined by the flood. “Students” is countable, but we cannot count “the grain”; it is one lump, one quantity.

SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT None is usually regarded as singular, but it can be used as a plural pronoun. None of the representatives has indicated how he or she will vote. OR None of the representatives have indicated how they will vote.
