Lower Courts: Judges do not have to be law trained!! Alderman’s Courts ▫Municipal ordinances within city limits Justice of the Peace ▫Civil cases for less than $15,000. Criminal cases: certain misdemeanors and most motor vehicle cases

Intermediate Courts Family Court ▫All domestic and juvenile cases Court of Common Pleas ▫Civil cases between $15,000- $50,000. All misdemeanors except certain drug-related & traffic offenses. All preliminary hearings in felony cases.

High Courts Superior Court ▫Exclusive jurisdiction over felonies and almost all drug offenses. No $ max in civil cases. Intermediate appeals court Chancery Court* ▫All matters relating to equity. Mostly corporate issues, trusts, estates, disputes involving land purchase and ownership, commercial and contractual matters.

Supreme Court State's appellate court which receives direct appeals from the Court of Chancery, the Superior Court, and the Family Court. Sets administrative policy for the court system.
