3 E.g. An English teacher said the following: -We will do a composition today. -You have to hand in your homework before the end of the lesson.  The teacher said, “ We will do a composition today. ”  The teacher said, “ You have to hand in your homework before the end of the lesson. ”

4 Features: 1. Exact wording of the original spoken sentence, no change of any words needed. 2. Open & ( “ ) close ( ” ) quotation marks needed for the spoken sentence. 3. Comma (, ) added to separate the two verbs. 4. Reporting verbs like say, tell, ask added.

5 Way 2: E.g. An English teacher said the following: -We will do a composition today. -You have to hand in your homework before the end of the lesson.  The teacher said that we would do a composition that day.  The teacher said that we had to hand in our homework before the end of the lesson.

6 Features: 1. “ that ” instead of comma (, ) added to separate the two verbs. 2. Change of words: e.g. “ We will do a composition today. ”  The teacher said that we would do a composition that day.

7 E.g. -You have to hand in your homework before the end of the lesson.  The teacher said that we had to hand in our homework before the end of the lesson.
