Resume Notes and Assignment

Resumes  Resumes develop a first impression.  Resumes summarize skills, education, experience and abilities.  Resumes are NOT an autobiography, telling your whole life story on a piece of paper. They are a summary of your life and qualifications.

Parts of a Resume  Heading Identification  Name, address, phone number and email address  Objective or Summary Statement  Career objective or summary of employment desired  Education  Name of school, type of degree or diploma, year of graduation as well as majors and minors

Parts of a Resume Continued  Experience  List your experience in chronological order. Identify duties and accomplishments.  Skills  Things you can do that makes you special—using the computer, speaking a foreign language, etc.  Activities / Awards / Interests  Clubs, organizations, volunteer experience, sports... things that show school/community involvement and leadership skills.

Other Information  There is not one “right way” to write a RESUME — everyone is unique.  Proofread your resume very carefully for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. You do not want ANY mistakes in your resume. Have someone review your resume for mistakes.  Get feedback from other people. Make sure that your resume looks good, is easy to understand, and says what you want it to say!  Resume is the marketing tool to get you an interview!

Resume Writing Assignment   You will need to turn in a typed resume on 1/28/11.   You will have one class day to work on this in the school’s computer labs (1/24).   This is worth 100 points

Resume Format   Your resume should include the following areas:   Heading Identification   Objective/Summary (what is your primary objective for the remainder of your high school career?)   Education (up to this point)   Experience (part-time jobs, household jobs like babysitting, mowing the lawn, etc.)

Format Continued   Skills (computer skills, language skills, etc.)   Activities/Awards/Interests (list what you are involved in, what you’ve accomplished, and what you are interested in)   You should also save this resume and continually update it. This will help with college applications in the very near future.
