1 Parts of Speech Review By Nicole Dgien

2 Nouns Definition: A person, place, thing, or idea. Some examples are:
snow, snowmen, skis, poles and cocoa Common nouns = Any person, place, thing Proper nouns = A specific person, place, thing The horse is in the pasture. That goat had triplets.

3 Pronouns Definition: A word that takes the place of a noun.
Some examples are: he, she, it, they Antecedent = The noun or group of words acting as a noun for which a pronouns stand for. Personal = Refers to a person - I, me, my Demonstrative = Points things out - this, that, these, those

4 Pronouns (continued) Relative = Begins a subordinate clause and connects it to another idea. - that, which, who, whom, whose Interrogative = Is used to begin a question. - what, which, who, whom, whose Indefinite = Refers to people, places, or things without specifying which ones. - another, much, both, all, anybody They are playing on the beach.

5 Action Verbs Definition: Tells what action someone or something is performing. Some examples are: jump, run, fly Infinitive = The to form of a verb Those goats just jumped the fence.

6 Helping Verbs Definition: Placed before other verbs to help the main verb. Some examples: will, was, can Not is not a verb Helping verb and verb might not be right next to each other. Watch contractions I can feed the chickens.

7 Adverbs Definition: A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or other adverb. Some examples are: always, very, not, quickly Usually ends in - ly Answers a question - how, where, when, in what way, to what extent Lisa quickly does her homework so that she can do her barn chores.

8 Linking Verb Definition: A linking verb connects it or describes it like an equal sign. Some examples are: am, is, are 8 be words - am, is, are, was, were, be, seeing, been 12 other words - appear, feel, look, seems, sound, taste, become, grow, remain, smell, stay, turn It appears that the horses are in the stalls.

9 Adjective Definition: A word that modifies or describes a noun.
Some examples are: big, green, colorful Sarah is the young girl with blond hair. Hannah has a fuzzy jacket.

10 Article Definition Article: Refers to the specific person, place, or thing. Indefinite article: Refers to any person place or thing. Some examples are: Article: a, an, the Indefinite article: a, an The sheep are in the pen.

11 Conjunction Definition: Connects words or groups of words.
Some examples are: After, since, when Coordinating = Connects words of the same kind - ForAndNorButOrYetSo Correlative = Same as coordinating but used in pairs - Both…and, neither…nor, either…or Subordinating = Connects two ideas, makes one idea dependent on the other- after, although, as I like country music and farm animals.

12 Preposition Definition: relates the noun or pronoun following it to another word in the sentence “Anywhere a cat can go.” Some examples are: about, on, to The black lamb is under its mother eating.

13 Interjection Definition: Expresses feelings or emotions and functions independently from the rest of the sentence. Some examples are: wow, ouch, yes Ouch! That goat just bit me! Oh no! That bull is charging towards me!
