1 Compress this paragraph down to one POWER sentence: “Still, the colonists died in droves, and living skeletons were driven to desperate acts. They were reduced to eating ‘dogges, Catts, Ratts, and Myce’ and even to digging up corpses for food. One hungry man killed, salted, and ate his wife, for which misbehavior he was executed. Of the four hundred settlers who managed to make it to Virginia by 1609, only sixty survived the “starving time” winter of 1609-1610.”

4 Why did I select these two documents to present together? How can they be used to answer the question?

5 Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the region had evolved into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur? Use the documents AND your knowledge of the colonial period up to 1700 to develop your answer.

7 England: Protestant Reformation. Catholic Spain helps Catholic Ireland in an attempt to break with England. England prevailed. England defeated the Spanish Armada (Elizabeth I was queen). The British swarmed America to take the lead in exploration.

9 In the 1500s the population was growing rapidly. Farmers began enclosing their land. Primogeniture forced other siblings to seek their fortunes abroad. 1600s joint stock companies.

10 1606 the Virginia Company receives a charter from James I to settle the new world. The charter guaranteed settlers the same rights as British citizens. (this is important to remember) Jamestown was founded May 1607. Things were bad. John Smith turned it around. Relations with Native Americans.

12 Virginia: tobacco was king. Representative self-government was born (1619) House of Burgesses created. Slavery was also born in the America in 1619. Maryland (1634) – was a haven for persecuted Catholics. Religious statue guaranteed religious freedom for Christians and the death penalty for everyone else.

13 Carolina (1670) – settlers came from Barbados and developed trade with the British West Indies. Rice becomes Carolina’s cash crop. African slaves worked the fields because of their immunity to malaria. 1712 North and South Carolina split.

14 Georgia – the buffer colony. Was founded by philanthrophists as a haven for people deeply in debt. Was to be a buffer between the Spanish in Florida and the French in Louisiana. All Christians except catholic enjoyed religious freedom.
