12. Virginia: tobacco was king. Representative self-government was born (1619) House of Burgesses created. Slavery was also born in the America in 1619. Maryland (1634) – was a haven for persecuted Catholics. Religious statue guaranteed religious freedom for Christians and the death penalty for everyone else.

13. Carolina (1670) – settlers came from Barbados and developed trade with the British West Indies. Rice becomes Carolina’s cash crop. African slaves worked the fields because of their immunity to malaria. 1712 North and South Carolina split.

14. Georgia – the buffer colony. Was founded by philanthrophists as a haven for people deeply in debt. Was to be a buffer between the Spanish in Florida and the French in Louisiana. All Christians except catholic enjoyed religious freedom.
