2 Top 10 Things a New Third Grader Might Want to Know…

3 Who is my teacher? B achelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, UGA Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from State University of West Georgia. Certified in grades P-5. 20 years teaching in Cobb County Schools, teaching 1 st, 3 rd, and 4 th grades. Eastvalley Eagle for 14 years! Georgia native! Married 18 years to my husband, Kevin. Two boys, Ben, 12, and Beau, 10. Two fur babies, Abbey and Sarge.

4 What are the behavior expectations in 3 rd grade? Leader in Me, Learning for a lifetime Excelling in our talents Achieving goals together Doing what is right ~Compliments ~ Table Points ~ Mystery Numbers ~Name on board- warning, check yourself ~Second offense- note home and in class consequence ~Third offense- out of class time out or possible office referral

5 Is 3 rd grade hard? ~EVRC/Accelerated Reader Program ~Common Core Curriculum ~Guided Reading (STAR Reading) ~Writer’s Workshop ~Math - (STAR Math) Addition/Subtraction facts should have been mastered in 2 nd grade. All students need to master multiplication facts. ~Guided Math ~Science & Social Studies Research Projects (Mrs. Levinson will be teaching science and Mrs. Baker will be teaching social studies) ~Standardized Tests (CoGAT, IOWA, Milestones, SLO)

6 7:20-8:00- Morning Work/ Announcements 8:00-9:15- Math 9:15-10:15- Guided Reading/ Restroom/Snack 10:15-11:05- Writing 11:10-11:55- Enrichment 11:55-12:10- Restroom, Read Aloud 12:12-12:42- Lunch 12:45-12:50- Restroom 12:55-1:20- Recess 1:20-2:00- Science 2:00-2:20- Math Review, Read Aloud 2:10-2:20- Pack-up/ Dismissal What will we do all day?

7 Other Classroom Procedures ~Daily Reading Logs (in class/home) ~Communication Folders/Agendas (daily) ~Red Graded Work Folders (Wednesdays) ~Weekly Tests

8 What homework will we have? Weekly Homework: ~Begins week of August 10~ ~Reading-20 min/daily (no log, record in agenda) ~Spelling –daily (2 activities per week, due Thursday; Spelling City= one activity) ~Math-daily ~Science, SS, Health- occasionally ~Book reports occasionally

9 Do I really have to go to school? Attendance (notes, excused or unexcused) Instruction time is important. Please plan family vacations with the school calendar in mind. School begins at 7:50 A.M. Children who arrive after 7:50 A.M. must stop by the office to sign in with a parent. Please see EV handbook for more info on excused/unexcused absences. Breakfast and Lunch Breakfast is $1.25 and is served from 7:20-7:45 a.m. Student lunch is $2.15. Place all money in an envelope with your child’s name, my name and what the money is for.

10 What field trips will we take? Performing Arts Center for Puppetry Arts Chattahoochee Nature Center High Touch, High Tech All field trips are tentative until further notice.

11 How can my parents/family help?  Room Rep  Media Moms/Dads  Art Print  Third Grade Olympics  Special Projects-at home or at school (as needed-copying, laminating)

12 How will my parents know what happens in my class? OPEN DOOR OF COMMUNICATION!!! ~Green folders-daily ~Agendas-daily (sign daily) ~Blog ~Remind 101 ~Email robin.baker@cobbk12.org (best form of communication)robin.baker@cobbk12.org

13 How can I make this the best year ever? Teacher  To build good character and create life-long learners  To provide a safe, risk- free environment  To teach students the tools for clear communication and skills for life Student  To be caring and responsible individuals  To work toward all academic goals  To demonstrate problem solving and communication skills throughout the year  To strive for their best work always

14 That’s a lot, anything else? New Report Cards. 3+ (Range of Reading only), 3, 2, 1 One healthy snack (anytime before 10:30) Birthdays~ ~Birthdays will not be celebrated during instructional time. ~Please feel free to join your child for lunch and distribute cookies or cupcakes. ~Invitations may be passed out at school only if ALL children from the class are invited. ~Teachers are not permitted to give out addresses or phone numbers. Dismissal changes should be in a separate, written form.
