Communities  Communities are found all over the world.  A community is a group of people who live in the same area.  There are different types of communities.  These different communities have things that are the same about them and things that are very different.

Three Kinds of Communities  Urban Communities  Suburban Communities  Rural Communities

 Urban Communities  Urban communities are in big cities. In urban communities, many people live close together.

 Urban Communities  People live in homes with small or no yards, or in tall apartment buildings.

 Urban Communities  People drive to work on crowded freeways, or use public transportation.

 Urban Communities  Lots of traffic means lots of car exhaust. Exhaust means AIR POLLUTION

 Urban Communities  People who live in big cities have access to movies, plays, sports arenas, concerts, and huge shopping malls.

 Urban Communities  Kids in urban communities go to school, to movies, shops, and hang out with their friends. Just like you.

 Suburban Communities  Suburban communities are in small cities that are close to big cities.

 Suburban Communities  Suburban communities have quite a few people, but more space than big cities.

 Suburban Communities  People in the suburbs tend to live in homes with yards. Fewer people live in apartments.

 Suburban Communities  Suburban communities have large areas of green space like parks.

 Suburban Communities  In the suburbs, all the homes tend to look alike. People trade originality for convenience. They get to live close to everything, but they don’t have to deal with crowds or traffic.

 Suburban Communities  There are stores, small malls, and libraries in the suburbs, but for real selection, people drive in to the city.

 Suburban Communities  Kids in suburban communities go to school, movies, shop, and hang out with their friends. Just like you.

 Rural Communities  Rural communities are out in the country, away from big cities.

 Rural Communities  People tend to live on ranches or farms, that are not close to any neighbors.

 Rural Communities  Kids in rural communities have lots of room to play, but may not be able to walk or ride their bike to a friend’s house.

 Rural Communities  Rural towns have very small stores, and fewer choices of entertainment. People may have to drive several miles to see a movie.

 Rural Communities  Kids in rural areas have opportunities that city kids don’t have. They may raise horses, cows, sheep, chickens, or crops. Their chores may be cleaning stalls instead of taking out the trash.

 Rural Communities  Kids in rural communities go to school, movies, shop, and hang out with their friends. Just like you.
