The History of Machinima A PowerPoint Presentation By Josh Craighead

What is “Machinima”?  Pronounced “Muh-sheen-uh-muh”.  Has to do with machines, but not enemas.  Machinima is a movie that uses a video game as its movie set. It is literally filmed inside of a video game.  The most common and well-known example is Red vs. Blue, a popular comedy series inside of the game “Halo”.

What does “Machinima” stand for?  Again, it has nothing to do with enemas.  Game engines are considered Machines. (A game engine is the limitations, physics, and graphics used in a game.)  The enema part at the end actually means “Cinema”. Which, everyone should know what that is. If you don’t, you must have been one very deprived child. But seriously, a cinema is a movie.  To sum up what I’m saying: “Machinima” is a mash- up of “Machine Cinema”

The Origin Of Machinima  Machinima began in 1996 when United Ranger Films made their first movie, Diary of a Camper. It took place in the game Quake, using film making techniques that would be seen today as rather primitive.  “Commentators agree that the work itself is primitive, but acknowledge its importance in establishing video games as a medium for filmmaking.” –from Wikipedia,The Free Encyclopedia

Modern Day Machine Enemas  Since then, Machinima has evolved and become more advanced. And more creative…  Two very notable modern Machinimas:  Red vs. Blue, brought public attention to machinima.  This Spartan Life, a talk show in a video game, where actual guests are interviewed.

Red vs. Blue  Although Diary of a Camper is the arguable origin of machinima, it wasn’t a very well-known medium of filmmaking. That is, until Rooster Teeth Productions started Red vs. Blue, a comedy series inside of the game Halo. The success of the series has “inspired” many other people to start their own series. The reason for the quotation marks is because many people cannot come up with their own ideas, so they copy others, having wise-cracking Halo characters talking to each other.
