Proceedings to The American Revolution

The French and Indian War The British ended up winning the war but it was very costly and put stress on the nations economy. British used the colonies to try to try to recover the money lost in fighting the war. One way was by putting taxes on goods in the colonies.

Stamp Act of 1765 Put tax on printed materials Made colonist upset because they felt that the British didn’t have the right to tax and that it had to be passed through legislation. The Act was dismantled in March of 1766.

Townshend Act of 1767 Put tax on items such as lead, paint, paper, and tea. Revived the quartering of British troops. Act was disapproved by many colonist. Boycotting by merchants lead to the cut import of British goods by 50%.

The Boston Massacre British soldiers were sent to Boston to keep the peace which resulted in tension between them and the citizens. Protestors of the Townshend Acts on March 5 1770 began insulting the British soldiers and throwing things at them. The British responded by shooting the men causing a riot in the streets. This was the beginning of a battle of power which lead to the American Revolution.
