3 Review Questions ▪ What is fascism? ▪ Dictator of totalitarian regime who is anti-communist and extremely nationalistic ▪ What were the terms of Treaty of Versailles? ▪ Germany punished, league of nations, new countries created ▪ How did Hitler consolidate power in Germany? ▪ Secret police, propaganda, indoctrination ▪ Why did Hitler create hatred against Jews? ▪ Based on historic anti-semitism

8 Appeasement ▪ Nations just “gave in” to the aggressor nations because they wanted to avoid war ▪ Lebensraum = “Living Space” ▪ Austria annexed by Hitler (1938) ▪ Munich Conference (1938) ▪ To avoid a war, British Prime Minster Chamberlain and French leaders persuaded Czechs to give Hitler portion of land called Sudentenland ▪ Hitler promised he would be satisfied and stop invading places ▪ He lied and then took all of Czechoslovakia

9 Invasion of Poland 1939 ▪ Nazi-Soviet Pact ▪ Hitler and Stalin were enemies ▪ Why? Stalin was communist and Hitler was fascist ▪ Fought against each other in WWI ▪ Hitler wanted to avoid a two-front war and prevent Stalin from allying with Western democracies (US, France, GB) ▪ Pact stated: ▪ Agree not to fight each other if war broke out ▪ Divide up Poland and Eastern Europe

10 Invasion of Poland 1939 ▪ Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 ▪ Official start of WWII ▪ Germany invaded from West, Russia from the East
