There are 2 types:
Renewable: Can be reused/replaced
Nonrenewable: Cannot be reused

Formed from “fossils,” or once living organisms in swamps
3 Types of Fossil Fuels:
Coal
Oil
Natural Gas

9. Fossil Fuels Pros (+) Cons (-) Cheap Burn easily Produce lots of heat
Hurt the environment with pollution
Non-renewable (We will run out!)
Releases CO2 into the air

10. Coal Formed from buried and decayed plants over millions of years
Heat & Pressure make different types of coal
Positives: Very cheap and abundant (lots available)

11. How do we obtain (get) coal?
Surface Mining:
Destroys landscapes
Deep Underground Mining
Damaging to miner’s lungs

12. Natural gas
Formed from the remains of tiny sea animals and plants from thousands of years ago
Gas gets trapped in rock
Main ingredient is CH4 (methane)

13. How to remove natural gas?
Wells use pressure and heat to push natural gas to the surface.
Usually found in the ocean, and has to be brought to land by ship.

14. Natural Gas Cleaner than coal The US has access to a lot of it
Provides a lot of energy when burned
BUT… we will run out of it in about 50 years (using it up too quickly)

15. Oil Used to make gasoline and other fuels
Also has to be pumped to the surface like natural gas
Produced greenhouse gases – air pollution!

16. Oil Spills
Oil has to be transported from the ocean to land, so they use pipelines.
When these pipes break, the oil is spilled into the ocean, causing huge disasters.
