What is the Cumberland Road?

Bridges, Changes, and More There were a variety of bridges on the Cumberland Road made of stone, wood, or iron. The roads began to be worn down after awhile so many parts of the road were macadamized. A traveller along the Cumberland Road could expect to pass macadam, plank, rutted, or washed out roads.

TIMELINE 1806: Cumberland Road construction approved by Thomas Jefferson. 1811: Construction begins. Early 1830’s: Road reaches Vandalia, Illinois. Late 1820s: Macadamizati on added to some parts of the road 1818: Stops at Wheeling, West Virginia and is open for use. 1819: Congress orders land west of Wheeling to be surveyed. 1833: Funding is responsible by states
