Herzberg proposed the Motivation-Hygiene Theory, also known as the Two factor theory (1959) of job satisfaction. According to his theory, people are influenced by two sets of factors: Motivator Factors Hygiene Factors

3 What are Hygiene Factors?
Hygiene factors are needed to ensure that an employee does not become dissatisfied. They do not cause higher levels of motivation, but without them there is dissatisfaction.

5 What are Motivation Factors?
Motivation factors are needed in order to motivate an employee into higher performance. These factors result from internal generators in employees.

Achievement Recognition of Achievement Responsibility for tasks Interesting job Advancement to higher level task Growth

8 Application to School Administration
As an administrator the most important of the two factors would have to be the motivation factor. This factor allows you to reward/recognize teachers and students for their achievements which in turn, promotes positive attitudes, self confidence and leads staff and students to be motivated internally.

9 Promoting the Use of Technology
The use of technology in education is now imperative. This theory explains what happens when you motivate a person. In education students/teachers perform better with technology. It increases family involvement, improves teacher skills, allow for student exploration and improves school administration and management.

10 Criticisms The theory does not allow for individual differences, such as particular personality traits, which would affect an individual’s unique responses to motivation or hygiene factors The assumption is that happy and satisfied workers produce more
