Law Enforcement=the people and the agencies responsible for making sure that Americans are following the rules and not breaking laws Jurisdiction=the power or authority over a certain area  Different law enforcement agencies have different jurisdiction depending on where they are 2. Are law enforcement agents concerned with criminal or civil law? ____________________ HOW do you know? 3. Ms. Wyche has jurisdiction over her school, but not over the entire district. Give an example of where you have jurisdiction and where you don’t have jurisdiction in your life.

4 All Law enforcement agencies are under the Executive Branch of city, county, state or federal government. Department of Justice (DOJ): Enforces Federal Law and oversees all federal law enforcement agencies except the CIA and Secret Service. –The Attorney General is the head of the DOJ & part of the President’s cabinet

Federal Jurisdiction 1.FBI=Federal Bureau of Investigation=the agency investigates crimes that happen domestically (INSIDE the US) Examples: crimes crossing state lines, investigating terrorist threats within the US 2. CIA=Central Intelligence Agency=the agency that investigates crimes that happen internationally (OUTSIDE of the US, but that still affect Americans) Example: gets information on terrorists in other countries

6 Federal Jurisdiction cont. 3. Secret Service=protect the President of the US and his family -Ex: president’s security guards

7 Purpose of federal agencies: each has specialized skills which can help to enforce laws. –Ex: the DEA (drug enforcement administration) has agents specialized in preventing drug trafficking.

8 Which agency has jurisdiction? President’s security guards- International crimes- Federal crimes in US- Domestic crimes- Terrorist threats in US- Crimes crossing state lines- Terrorist treats in other countries-

9 III. State Jurisdiction 4. SBI=State Bureau of Investigation=the agency that helps local law enforcement investigate crimes that happen INSIDE ONE state - Ex: investigating a string of bank robberies across the state or computer crimes against children. 5. State Trooper=enforce laws and traffic rules on the state highways and interstates Ex: monitor speed on roads like I-95 6. What is the difference between the SBI and the FBI?

10 V. County Jurisdiction 6. Sheriff=enforces laws around the county called ordinances and provides security at the court house 9. Illustrate the jurisdiction of the sheriff below. 10. What happen if a criminal drives from Halifax into Northampton Country?

11 VI. City Jurisdiction 7. Police=enforce city and town laws called ordinances -Ex: make an arrest following a robbery

12 Magistrate: In criminal cases determines if further action is warranted when a police officer or a citizen claims that a crime has been committed (usually a judge) National Guard: reserve militaries in each state that are called to federal service. Can serve in the US or abroad.

13 Which agency has jurisdiction? -Enforce county laws- -Enforce traffic laws on the highway- -Help out in large criminal investigations across the state- -Responsible for watching the town- -Look at kids computer crimes across NC- Guards the courthouse-

14 Assignment- Choose 2: Option 1: Create a rap or poem involving all of the agencies we learned about today. Make sure you include their jurisdiction and what their jobs are. Option 2: Write a story that involves at least 4 of the agencies we talked about in class. Make sure you include their jurisdiction and what their jobs are Option 3: Create a brochure on the federal agencies (FBI, CIA, Secret Service). Make sure you include their jurisdiction and what their jobs are. Also include pictures of each agency and an example of a job they would do.
