6. Mormons Settle Utah The Mormons journeyed westward seeking a safe place to practice their religion. Joseph Smith Brigham Young Three issues divided the Mormons and the federal government: 1.The Mormon Church controlled the election process in the Utah Territory. 2.The church supported businesses that were owned by Mormons. 3.The practice of polygamy was illegal in the rest of the country.

7. The California Gold Rush The discovery of gold brought thousands of new settlers to California. In 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill. There were disputes over water rights. CA was not yet a state, so federal laws did not apply.

8. California’s Changing Population The gold rush permanently altered the makeup of California’s population. Use two sections of your paper to take notes for “The Mexican-American War” In 1848, San Francisco had only 200 inhabitants. By 1870, San Francisco had a population of more than 100,000!
