3 Mormons DEFINITION : They were the largest group of settlers to move to the Mexican Cession. The Mormons prospered in Utah despite the harsh dessert climate. The church was founded by Joseph Smith.

4 Past and present leaders Joseph Smith Was a farmer who grew up in upstate NY. He was an energetic, popular, and HANDSOME man. He said a man could have more than one wife. Brigham Young He was the new leader after Joseph Smith was murdered He searched for a new home for the Mormons. He founded their home, that later became Salt lake city, Utah.
