2. How were slaves treated in their everyday lives? Slaves were very mistreated, they were thought of as property and nothing else. “They provided only what was needed to keep their slaves healthy enough to work.” (Diane Hart, pg. 275). So they were not even given any respect and did not get taken care of the best way either.

3. What did slaves do? Slaves worked on plantations or in a household for slaveholders. “Not all slaves worked in the field. Some were skilled seamstresses, carpenters, or blacksmiths.” (Diane Hart, pg. 274). But they all had it very hard, and worked for long periods of time.

4. What were their communities like? Also they lived in little houses, usually full of people they did not know. “We lodged in log huts, and on bare ground. Wooden floors were an unknown luxury. In a single room were huddled, like cattle, ten or more persons…” (Diane Hart, pg.275). They usually were very cramped and lonesome.

5. What happened to slave Families? Slaves were not supposed to have families, so they were usually taken away. “ Legally, slave families did not exist.” ( Diane Hart, pg. 279). So the slaveholders would take them away from each other saying it was part of the law.

6. Was there any chance to freedom? It was hard to become a free slave. They would either have to be granted freedom by their owner or run away, by using the underground railroad. “Freedom was possible by running away or by manumission, by the owner.” (Wikipedia, Wikimedia a Foundation). So most slaves would not even try, knowing it was so hard.

7. Conclusion In the end, slavery is an unfair working labor, to the African Americans. Also that it was a good thing that the United States got rid of slavery.
