3 © International Institute of Business Analysis 3 Benefits – Student/Protégé  Explore the world of work through interaction with professionals in business analysis  Gain an experienced BA practitioner's perspective on applying textbook concepts to real-life situations.  Familiarize themselves with corporate protocol.  Identify long-term professional development needs. Realize the value of networking.  Develop a meaningful professional relationship over a specified period of time.

4 © International Institute of Business Analysis 4 Eligibility – Student/Protégé  Current IIBA national membership (Students waived 1 st year as a member)  Current Baltimore IIBA chapter membership  If student – full or part-time in good standing, membership fee 50% off  Complete application  Actively attend chapter events (50%)

5 © International Institute of Business Analysis 5 Matching you with a mentor Consideration for Preference of:  Schedules  Location  Industry experience  BA skill set All mentors and protégés will be interviewed and matched according to preferences and availability Mentors and protégés will receive a brief biography of each other.

6 © International Institute of Business Analysis 6 Guidelines  Mentors should meet with their student once a month (via phone or in person)  Mentors should meet with their student at least 3 times a year in person  Meetings should be 1-2 hours  Relationship shall be 1 year in duration  Mentor should make initial contact with protégé within 3 weeks of assignment

7 © International Institute of Business Analysis 7 First Meeting Example Plan for your fist meeting with your mentor. Topic suggestions included below. Protégé – Discuss current job responsibilities, how you got into the profession, past academic and personal preparation for career, perceptions and expectations of mentor relationship, questions, future meeting and contact plans Student– Explain why you are interested in BA career, any past academic and personal preparation for career, perceptions and expectations of mentor relationship, questions, future meeting and contact plans

8 © International Institute of Business Analysis 8 Subsequent Meetings/Activities Ideas for other meetings with your mentor may include:  Shadow day at work  Attend a chapter meeting together  Attend training class/program  Attend other BA-related professional meetings (DAMA, PMI…)  Discuss common BA challenges and issues  Resume review
