4  Mesopotamia Empire  Sargon of Akkad was the first empire in Mesopotamia. He created this position 45000 years ago.  The empire position not only controls people but changes peoples lives.  Sargon took control of both northern and southern Mesopotamia.  Over the years, Sargon controlled lands that stretched in a curve from the Mediterranean Sea through the Fertile Crescent  Sargon’s conquest helped to let people know Akkadian ideas such as the Akkadian writing system

5  Babylon Empire  After Sargon of Akkad went, a powerful Amorite king named Hammurabi took in charge of the empire of Babylon  To help Hammurabi control the land, he used governors such as tax collectors and appointed judges to let people know his rules  Hammurabi soon created a number of laws called the code of laws  The code of law kept the people under control and Hammurabi’s job became easier  Hammurabi’s goal for the code of laws was to bring justice to the people. Code of Laws- Set of written rules for people to obey Justice – Fair treatment of people to people

6  Assyrian Empire  The Assyrian king destroyed 89 cities, 820 villages and had burned the city of Babylon.  Enemies had iron weapons and battering rams for city wall.  The ruler of the Assyrians had to pay tribute.  If the rulers failed to pay tribute, the army destroyed cities in that land.  The tribute brought money and goods into the empire’s treasury.  Enemies who were captured were allowed to choose there leader.  The Assyrians killed or made slaves of captives and also spread enemy leaders and burned their cities.  Some captive people were forced to exile Exile- Forced to move from homelands to other lands, often far away

7  Chaldean Empire (New Babylonian Empire)  The Medes and the Chaldeans joined forces to defeat the Assyrians. They both are Assyrians enemies.  The force completely destroyed the city if Nineveh by burning it to the ground.  The Chaldeans were led by Nebuchadnezzar II who drove the Egyptians out of Syria and captured trading.  Nebuchadnezzar II built an artificial mountain covered with trees and plant called the Hanging Gardens of Babylon for his wife to stay with him.  Weak rulers, internal conflicts about religion upset and divided the Chaldeans which made it easy for Cyrus of Persia to conquer the land.

8   Question- Why did the Assyrians get tribute from the ruler? What happens if a ruler failed to? Answer- The Assyrians got tribute from the ruler for them to pay the Assyrian army for the people given protection.  Question – Exile means what?
