4 A Powerful Army  Assyrians used inventions in war.  Assyrians were mean, nasty people.  They had iron weapons and only a few of their enemies had weapons made of iron.  They tried all of the possible ways to get inside the city walls of their enemy. Harsh Treatment of Captured People:  Assyrians killed or captured many people.  They also killed enemy leaders, burned cities and exiled people to far away places.

5 A Huge Empire  Assyria ruled the conquered lands by appointing a native governor who would then be expected to obey under the Assyrian Emperor’s direction.  The Assyrian army provided protection to the lands they ruled but the governor had to pay for that protection with tributes.  If the local governor didn’t pay, than the Assyrian army would destroy the cities and villages and exile the people that lived there. Assyria Crumbles  In 609 B.C., the Assyrian empire fell because the Medes and Chaldeans joined together and defeated them.  The Medes and Chaldeans completely destroyed the Assyrian capital of Nineveh.

6 Chaldeans take Assyrian Lands  After the fall of the Assyria Empire, the Chaldean Empire became famous in 605 - 562 B.C.  The Chaldean armies drove the Egyptians out of their lands and took control of the important trading cities.  Their means ways caused revolts by the captive people. Height of Wealth and Power  The Chaldean Emperor rebuilt the capital city of Babylon and created the colorful Ishtar Gate.  He also built a huge ziggurat that was 300 ft. tall.  To please his wife, he built an artificial mountain with plants and trees. The Empire Fades  Weak emperors and internal conflicts upset and divided the Chaldeans.  This weakened state made it easy for other city-states to conquer the land that belonged to the Chaldeans.
