I DOF

DOF works because of an optical property known as the “circle of confusion”.

circle of confusion is an optical spot caused by a cone of light rays from a lens not coming to a perfect focus.

Circles of confusion

Lower Aperture #s (large hole), longer focal lengths and close up lenses all produce more confusion. More confusion = Shallow DOF

Nearly any picture can be made more interesting with a shallow depth of field.

Occasionally a photograph only works because of the Depth of Field.

Shallow DOF will reduce organics to form and line.

Shallow DOF can allow the photographer to remove the background visually.

Once the back ground is removed as a “problem”, the subject becomes emphasized.

See the satellite dish?

See the satellite dish?

Shallow DOF will focus the viewer on exactly what you want them to see.

Shallow DOF is perhaps most effective in portraiture.

People are a visual accumulation of detail. Shallow DOF lets the photographer concentrate on specific details.

Shallow DOF can let you Hide subjects in the background.

Shallow DOF works particularly well with body study.

It is important to control how much DOF you want, and where the focus will lie.

Use Manual Focus in order to be accurate.

The close up filters will force you to get very close to your subject in order to focus

On the lens A  M For manual focus Turn here to manual focus

Press “info” for the information screen. Use the click wheel to change the aperture (f-stop). The shutter speed will change automatically. Make sure that your shutter speed is above 30 if you are using a tripod! Shutter Speed F-Stop

Take all of your pictures using the “A” (Aperture priority) Setting. You set the aperture, the camera will set the correct shutter speed for you.

Set your ISO to 400. Your F-stop will be set to 2.8 inside the lens. You will need to guess the shutter speed by moving the click wheel.

Bracketing = Guessing Using multiple shutter speeds sometimes over and underexposing the image in order to get the correct exposure.

For this assignment: You will be placed in groups. You will each take 10 shallow DOF of hands, feet, or faces in your group
