Tutoring 101 What to keep in mind

It all starts with connections https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFnMTHhKdkw Be positive with the student, let them know you’re on the same team Find balance- create connections, but still hold students accountable Ask them: How are your classes going? How can you improve? What steps are you taking to improve? What assignments are due this week? When will you complete them? When will you study this week?

Organization Most students need help getting organized: Help them create a google calendar or paper calendar Include a study time in their calendar where they commit to working weekly Put important dates on the calendar- help students prioritize (give reminders about assignments 1 week out, etc.)

Inquiry “Tell me I forget. Teach me I will remember. Involve me and I will learn.” –Ben Franklin Students need to figure out answers by questioning and exploring. Try not to give answers, but guide students to the answer, even if it takes longer.

Skills Work on skills heavily Reading strategies (how to interact with a text, highlighting, questioning while reading) Writing process- brainstorming, pre-writing, organization, revising, editing, publishing Study skills- how to take notes and organize them The workshops will be set up to increase these skills, and you can add to this by reinforcing what is learned See me if you want training on reading strategies, writing strategies, note-taking skills, study skills, cognitive thinking skills, organization

Consistency Students need consistency and accountability They will be held accountable for coming to tutoring If they are late or absent I need to know ASAP You should meet at the same day and time weekly (there may be certain times where you may need to change, but try to be consistent)

Students with Special Needs Set up a meeting with me to talk about the needs of the students you are working with specifically Some students may need to take breaks. Have them focus completely when you are working, but allow breaks if needed. With all students use these 3 strategies: Pre-teaching- access background knowledge to build confidence Chunking- go over information in chunks Use repetition and review

Learning Styles All students learn differently Keep in mind your student most likely does not do well with lecture style, or they would not need tutoring, so avoid this style Example- when reviewing for a test, instead of telling them about the content, make a game out of it
