Task Passive Learners Active Learners Class Lectures Try to write everything that the professor says Decide what is important and then write it out in own words Textbook Readings Read (all you do is move your eyeballs from line to line down the page) then get bored or fall asleep, forget what you read by the time you get to the end of the paragraph or page Read, think, underline key concepts, question, try to link ideas, create a structure for the topic, map out the structure, summarize in own words or in table form (for more information on active reading, refer to the handout) Studying Reread notes, texts and handouts Organize study materials and topics / themes; make outlines, graphs, charts, diagrams; search for patterns or trends; figure out possible exam questions; look for comparisons or contrasts
