1 ST Continental Congress Where? Philadelphia When? September 1774 Who? 56 Delegates all - colonies but GA

WHY? Response to Intolerable Acts imposed by British on the colonies in 1774

What? Drew up a declaration of colonial rights which: Agreed to give aid to Boston in the form of food and clothing BUT not to take up arms against the British UNLESS the British used force against the colonies. Agreed to reconvene in May 1775 if demands were not met

RESULT? Colonists stepped up military preparations especially in New England towns: stockpiling arms and gunpowder.

BRITISH RESPONSE? Spring of 1775, General Gage ordered troops to march from Boston to Concord, Mass. To seize the “illegal” weapons. DID THE COLONISTS STAND STILL FOR THIS?????

“The British are coming…..the British are coming…………” April 18, 1775 – Ride of Paul Revere, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott to warn that a legion (700) English troops were heading for Concord.!!!
