1 Success is what counts. 1 Best Practice - Learning at the Right Time Identify, in detail, the items of specific knowledge and skills that students must students possess to be successful from street (pre-admission) to completion (degree, certificate or transfer) excluding academic content of courses other than a success class Organize the list into a Right Time sequence from pre- admission to the end of the term including reinforcement Assume high risk situations exist: need financial aid, need tutoring, etc.

2 Success is what counts. 2 Learning at the Right Time, cont’d Identify the areas that would be responsible for assuring the student develops the knowledge/skills. There will be some knowledge/skills where more than one area has responsibility for development and reinforcement Develop a process flow chart to illustrate the time frame of when knowledge/skills are learned and what area has responsibility for developing and reinforcing Similar in concept to a curriculum map

3 Success is what counts. 3 Design Principles Use Process Flow Charting approach to determine appropriate content for each area of responsibility: Admissions, Orientation, etc. Add detail as appropriate Some learning and skills will require reinforcement from multiple areas Involve faculty, staff and students in design process

4 Success is what counts. 4 A Key Points The Learning at the Right Time principle and the Process Flow Chart provide a structured approach to the design or redesign of Orientation, Advising, etc Best Practices for each area: Orientation, Advising, etc. should be incorporated into this model
