Immigration in Melbourne 1900s-1920s

Topic: How did immigration between 1900-1920 influence Melbourne?

Immigrants came from: United Kingdom - Over 20% of United Kingdom migrants came from Scotland, but less than 10% came from Ireland Germany Little from Greece China

Why did they migrate to Melbourne? Immigrants who migrated to Melbourne were seeking a healthy and prosperous life in another part of the world and looking for employment to provide for their family in a new country.

Where did they live once they arrived? The English clustered increasingly in the eastern suburbs The Welsh in Williamstown (where there was a Welsh Calvinist Church) The Scots in Carlton (where there was a Gaelic Church), and the Irish in Melbourne proper, its inner suburbs, and in Coburg and Heidelberg. There was also a small German farming community in Thomastown.

How did they get here? Immigrants arrived to Melbourne on Steamships which became the established method of transport during the period of 1900s to 1920s. It then took 35 to 40 days of travel on the ships.

What jobs did they do? Many of the immigrants to Australia were sponsored by friends or others of their own cultural group who were already here, and were set up in farming or trades. Usually the husbands were the ones that worked, the most common fields of work were stonemasons, blacksmiths, shopkeepers and farmers.

Average Family size: The average family size during the 1900s would have been 3-4 children, there for a family size of 6- 7.

Can we still see remnants of the first waves of immigrants? Where? Due to the range of immigrants that moved to Melbourne there are many different places that are dedicated to a specific country. The remnants we see today of the first waves of immigrants are Chinatown located in Little Bourke Street, Little Saigon which is Vietnamese located in Victoria Street, Little Italy located in Lygon Street and also the Greet precinct located in Lonsdale Street. There are also festivals and museums dedicated to a particular country restaurants. Melbourne is know as the most multicultural city in the world and this is all due to the immigrants that have made Melbourne their home.
