Interesting facts about D-Day D-Day is the name given to the landing of 160,000 Allied troops in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. The invasion, also called “Operation Overlord”, involved five separate landings by American, British, and Canadian troops, which was commanded by American General Dwight D. Eisenhower. D-Day was the largest invasion fleet of all time. There were 175,000 soldiers, 1,200 fighting ships, 10,000 planes, 4,126 landing crafts, and hundreds of tanks used for this invasion. The most difficult landing of D-Day was at Omaha Beach.
